After the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, the United States began issuing and its own Continental Currency in 1776. The 1776 Continental Dollar was struck in three metals: Brass, Silver< and Pewter. There is no value printed on the coin, but the value is thought to have been $1, hence the came Continental Dollar. It is believed that the coin was designed by Benjamin Franklin, and the dies were believed to have been engraved by Elisha Gallaudet.
The obverse of the Continental Dollar features the sun shinning on a sundial , the Latin motto “Fugio” (I Fly), and “Mind your business”.
The reverse features 13 chain links representing the Thirteen Colonies with “American Congress” and “We Are One” in the center.
