On October 19, 1781, a British army commanded by General Lord Cornwallies surrendered to a combined American and French force led by General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. This decisive victory effectively ended the six-year struggle for American independence and set the stage for the creation of a new democratic republic based upon the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence.
