Before the Revolutionary Wat hard currency (coin) was very rare. Most people used Spanish milled dollars, which the cut into eighths and used in business transactions.
During the War, coins and eighths were hard to come by so the state government and American Congress issued their own paper money to conduct trade. In order to finance the War, the Continental Congress printed massive amounts of currency, which flooded the market and drove down the value of the “continentals,” as they were known.

$20 Continental Note – Because of the rampant inflation of this note, the phase “not worth a Continental” became prevalent in the new America. Note that this bill displays the name “United Sates.” Issues printed before 1777 read “United Colonies”
