In the late 18th century, British manufactures of creamware vessels and plates found a great opportunity for marketing their goods in the new nation of the United States. They did not hesitate to appeal to their American customers by using transfer decoration in a variety of symbols evoking American pride and virtue.

The design of the Liverpool creamware jug was in production 1806-1810. It presented a bold statement in its symbolic decoration for American success in war and in upholding the concepts of good government embodied in the U.S Constitution.

On the main face of the reproduction jug, the designer included a map of the United States and the Atlantic Ocean. George Washington and Lady Library are set on the left, beneath the airborne allegorical figures of Fame. To the right, the design also features a seated figured of Dr. Benjamin Franklin with a book open on his lap, and, beside him an observant warrior in classic armor.

The other face features lines from the poem American Freedom composed by an Englishman, Edward Rushton, extolling the virtues of Warren Montgomery, and George Washington. Surrounding these words and the slogan “INDEPENDENCE” are symbol of industry and commerce, with the Lady Liberty cap and the national flag of stars and stripes represented overhead. The upper edge of the jug bears a continuous scrolling border of leaves.

The edge chosen for the great Seal of the United States, which was adopted by Congress in 1782, is set beneath the spout. Above this symbol is an appropriate slogan, “SUCCESS TO AMERICA”

Three of the 19th century Liverpool jugs from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Collection are featured in the gallery dedicated to American Identity at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.
