CHARGER-TULIP

During the 16th and 17th centuries, charger plates served both practical and symbolic functions, acting as large, decorative platters for serving food and as prestigious display pieces that showcased status, wealth, and artistic skill. They were central to formal dining, helping to create an orderly and elegant setting by providing a base for other dishes and catching spills. Their designs, such as the intricate tin-glazed majolica or slipware, also made them valuable works of art, sometimes commissioned as gifts or decorative objects rather than for daily use. The charger plate shown above is a reproduction of one of several displayed in the gallery exhibits at Jamestown Settlement.
